Volunteering for the CFA Ottawa Society
Executive Positions
Generally, volunteering with the CFA Ottawa Society in supporting roles leads to a position on the Executive after one or more years by nomination and Board vote. Most executives are Board members; however this is not always the case.
Below is a general description of volunteer roles and responsibilities.
President
- Develops the CFA Ottawa Society’s annual strategic plan
- Organizes and chairs (monthly ) meetings with the Executives
- Oversees the efforts of the Executives of the society
- Reviews annual financial statements of CFA Ottawa Society
- Authorizes payments as signing officer for CFA Ottawa Society
- Attends CFA Ottawa Society organized luncheons, dinners and events
- Attends national and international annual CFA Institute organized conferences
- Responsible for ongoing awareness campaign for the CFA designation in Ottawa
- Responsible for managing the sponsorship and media relationships
- Responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of the Forecast Dinner.
- Signing authority for Society
Total time commitment 10 - 20 hours per month
Vice President
- Contributes to the development of the CFA Ottawa Society’s annual strategic plan for society
- Contribute and reviews society bylaws and governing principles to ensure ongoing compliance
- Reviews annual financial statements of CFA Ottawa Society
- Authorizes payments as signing officer for CFA Ottawa Society
- Signing officer for Society
- Provides stewardship and guidance to CFA Ottawa Society’s chaired positions
- Participates in CFA Ottawa Society’s (monthly ) Executive meetings
- Participates in CFA Ottawa Society’s organized luncheon and dinners
- Attends national and international annual CFA Institute organized conferences
Total time commitment approx. 10-15 hours per month
Treasury Chair
- Contributes to the development of the strategic plan
- Manages and oversees the CFA Ottawa Society ’s financial affairs
- Prepares annual financial statements for CFA Ottawa Society
- Prepares preliminary budget in accordance with CFA Ottawa Society’s Strategic Plan
- Attends CFA Ottawa Society’s (monthly) Executive meetings
- Participates in CFA Ottawa Society’s organized luncheon and dinners
- Attends national and international CFA Institute organized conferences as backup to President and Vice President
- Total time commitment 5-10 hours per month
Program Chair
- Responsible for identification, recommendation and confirmation of potential speakers.
- Responsible for organizing luncheons and dinners in coordination with speakers and venues.
- Responsible for the feedback from program events.
- Participate in CFA Ottawa Society’s (monthly) Executive meetings
- Attend CFA Ottawa Society’s organized luncheon and dinners
- Responsible for chairing the career fair event (annual).
- Coordinate programming events with CFA Institute.
- Total time commitment – approximately 10-15 hours per month
Public Awareness Chair
- Responsible for improving the brand awareness of the CFA Program designation throughout the community.
- Building relationships with members, candidates and potential candidates
- Creating awareness among the business community
- Responsible for media and public relations
- Lead all marketing, promotional and member-appreciation activities Responsible for managing the Public Awareness budget and CFA Institute reimbursement requirements
- Develop and manage sponsorship activities
- Total time commitment – approximately 5-10 hours per month
Education Chair
- Acts as a liaison between the CFA Ottawa Society and candidates
- Organizes mock exam and prepares programs for Ottawa area candidates
- Promotes continuing education for CFA Charter holders in the Ottawa area
- Total time commitment 3-5 hours per month
Membership /Scholarship Chair
- Contributes to the development of the strategic plan
- Manages Society’s membership review process
- Responsible for the Society scholarship program
- Participates in CFA Ottawa Society’s (monthly) Executive meetings
- Attends CFA Ottawa Society’s organized luncheon and dinners
- Organizes and Coordinates Society’s membership appreciation initiatives
- Total time commitment is approximately 5 hours per month
Website Technology
- Responsible for updating and maintaining various sections of the website with new content and information when required .
- Aid in coordinating changes to the website with Web designers and CFA Ottawa Executives
Administrator
- Manage incoming emails and distributing email messages to the appropriate members of the CFA Ottawa Executive
- Responsible for replying to basic inquiries
- Coordinates the email notices of upcoming events, job postings or any other information that needs to be disseminated to the members and candidates in the Ottawa area
- Manages the registration of individuals for various CFA Ottawa events
- Issues invoices and participates in the collection of funds from members during CFA Ottawa events
